Nestled in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, it’s hard to think of a better ballooning destination than Mansfield. This small alpine township is surrounded by a colourful patchwork of farmland, forested hills, snowy peaks, mountain pastures and snaking waterways – the exact type of scenery that’s best viewed from 1,000 feet in the air. Add in generally calm weather conditions plus a unique local topography and you’ve got one of the most flyable spots in the state.

The crew at Global Ballooning Australia couldn’t agree more, and have just launched sunrise flights from the regional hub. Already operating in Melbourne’s CBD and the Yarra Valley, the addition of Mansfield to the location line-up provides an exciting new option for thrill-seekers and adventure tourists alike.

Leading the charge in Mansfield is the highly skilled Georgia Croft, who at 24 years of age is one of only five female hot air balloon pilots in the country. Her passion for flying was ignited when she worked as a member of the ground crew at a national ballooning competition, after which she decided to switch up her anthropology studies to focus on meteorology, microclimates, the art of navigation and the principles of aeronautics.

“Flying in Mansfield feels like turning back the clock to old-school ballooning,” says Croft. “In the sky it feels like it’s just me and my balloon, at the whim of the wind, creeping over the hills. I also need to recognise my ground crew who are often strategically (or frantically) navigating dirt tracks, farm gates and cattle.”

This once-in-a-lifetime experience lasts almost three-and-a-half hours (including at least an hour spent floating high up in the sky), and is suitable for both adults and children. It’s a magical way to mark a milestone birthday, celebrate a special occasion or simply soak up the sights on a getaway to the region. Gift vouchers are also available, and can be emailed instantly or posted in a gold envelope – how’s that for a fancy pressie?!

Founded almost 30 years ago by renowned balloonist Kiff Saunders, Global Ballooning Australia is an award-winning, family-run business with an impeccable safety record. It’s the only hot air balloon company in Australia to offer a special easy-access basket for people with disabilities, and also the only Victorian operator to offset all carbon emissions (yes, that means your flight is carbon neutral).

A sunrise flight over Mansfield costs $395 and departs from Alzburg Resort. The price includes insurance, in-flight photos and a special certificate of completion. For more booking information or to purchase a gift voucher, head to the website.
