Over the past 150 years (yes that’s right, 150 years), the South Melbourne Market has cemented its place in Melbourne’s history and culture – and this month, they’re shining the spotlight on sustainability.
Learn, have fun and inspire your family to live and shop more sustainably with South Melbourne Market as they showcase a wide array of sustainability practices, workshops, tours, a sustainability circuit and an exhibition all about turning trash into treasure.
Market goers can take a guided sustainability circuit guided tour around the market, meet with the traders taking sustainability seriously and get a behind the scenes look at how the Market is turning food waste into garden fertilizer.
There will also be a free cooking demonstration on how to have a waste free kitchen with Jessie from Leftover Lovers, a non-for-profit organisation working to diminish the huge amount of food waste that’s being created daily by Melburnians.
Kids can head along to an upcycling denim workshop where they’ll learn how to make their own denim bag from old pairs of jeans. Plus, South Melbourne Market has asked local artists to find treasure in the trash and create art from Market waste for the free Turning Trash to Treasure Exhibition running at SO:ME Space on market days.
Other highlights include beeswax wraps workshops, DIY soap making and school holiday craft workshops.
