Time Out says

This Richmond bar is celebrating the launch of its winter cocktail selection with free tats – first in, best dressed – from Melbourne’s best ink studio

Now here’s a cocktail bar that certainly isn’t afraid to be unorthodox. Instead of quietly announcing its new line of seasonal cocktails via a menu announcement like other bars might, Swan Street’s the Ugly Duckling has decided to throw a wild tattoo party instead.

From 8-10pm on Thursday, August 3, thirsty ink fanatics will have the chance to get a free tat from Fine Line, one of Melbourne’s most in-demand tattoo studios. There’s usually a six-month waitlist, so if you've been looking for an excuse to get it done – this is it.

The studio’s main artist Cholo (one of the nation’s best) will be waiting, needle in hand, so you can get a fresh new lick of ink while you sip on your Martini. Renowned all over Australia for his signature fine line cursive lettering and intricate illustrations, you can trust that his work won’t look like the one your mate got one drunken night out overseas. And even if you’re not one for body art, there’s still plenty of fun to be had at the party.

The Ugly Duckling’s winter-inspired range of cocktails promises a treat, with modern spins on beloved classics and bold new flavour combos. On the warm and comforting side, try the Bread and Butter Pudding elixir or the Raisin Toast Blaze with raisin toast buttered rum, crème de cacao, Brookies Mac and Pedro Ximenez.

Or maybe you'll be tempted by a Japanese Yuzu Sour (Japanese whisky, cynar, yuzu juice, star anise syrup and aromatic bitters) or the Choc Orange Espresso (orange vodka, Cointreau, dark crème de cacao, coffee liqueur, espresso, saline and tuille), also both part of the 13-strong new collection. Head bartender Craig Medley calls the new wave of creations “one of the venue’s most exciting and diverse seasonal cocktail lists for quite some time”.

We recommend rocking up early to ensure you get a spot, but once you’re in, it will be a night to remember. Find a good seat, watch the bar talent weave their cocktail magic and get a new tat – or don’t! It’s up to you. Just know that if you choose to get the Ugly Duckling’s motif tattooed, the bar will shout you an entire evening of cocktails. Now, that's an option for risk-takers... or those who just really love a drink. See you there!

Prefer a slick Old-Fashioned or a fruity Marg? Decide one sip at a time with our list of Melbourne's best cocktails bars. There's also a party at Black Pearl you might want to pop on your radar.
