Veg Out Community Gardens

A volunteer-run community garden in St Kilda, which hosts a farmers' market the first Saturday of each month at the Peanut Farm Reserve just beyond it. The site was transformed from a disused bowling club into this oasis in 1998, when Port Phillip Council offered it as studio space to local artists. Some of their number were moved to tend to the bowling green properly and turn it into crops. They were later aided by local environment officer (and EcoCentre coordinator) Neil Blake, who pulled together a team of local gardeners to create more of a tangible design.

Surreally, Luna Park's Scenic Railway towers above all the topiary, but it's as serene a place as can be. There are plenty of bench seats scattered around the 140 plots, which have been inventively – and often exotically – tended. As well as the free-roaming birds and butterflies, there are many contented-looking chooks, quolls and guinea pigs. There are toilets, a kitchen and barbecue area, making it a very tempting proposition to stay the whole day.
