How Public Transport Victoria is keeping you safe and well on your commute

Nervous about hopping on that train or tram? Don't be

We've all become very aware of hygiene in this new world. Cough in your elbow, blow your nose in a tissue (that you dispose of straight away), wear a mask on public transport, in supermarkets and where you can't socially distance, and always, always have the bottle of hand sanitiser in your bag and/or pocket.

But what about the trains, trams and buses themselves? Public Transport Victoria is making sure the Melbourne transport network is clean and safe for all travellers at all times. All trains, trams, buses, stops and stations are disinfected and sanitised every day to make sure your commute is comfortable, clean and safe.

There are also lots more top-up options so you can top up your myki without handling cash or interacting with another person. There are more Quick Top Up machines than ever, and you can also top up online or at your nearest myki retailer. The smartest way to do it is via auto top-up, which will automatically fill your myki with more money when the balance drops below a certain amount. Then you'll never have to use another top-up machine again (and you'll also avoid that dreaded ba-bao noise and red light that tells you your balance is negative).

There are things you can do to stay safe and help your fellow Melburnians, too. Make sure you wear a fitted face mask covering your mouth and nose when you're on any form of public transport. Register your myki to make contact tracing easier if there are any outbreaks on public transport. Stagger your travel if you can to avoid crowded transport – it makes it more likely you'll get a seat, too. Sanitise your hands frequently, using either your own hand sanitiser or sanitiser provided at many stations. Avoid cash when you can, topping up your myki via card or online.
