Natural wonders

The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges landscape is a patchwork of different terrain: dense woodlands turn into lush fern forests which open up into undulating hills dotted with vines. One place to best appreciate the region’s unique natural beauty is Mount Donna Buang. The summit is 1,245 metres above sea level, and offers panoramic views of Melbourne, the Cathedral Ranges and neighbouring Mount Baw Baw. In the warmer months you can hike, abseil and picnic, and in winter you can even go tobogganing. Avid horticulturists won’t want to miss the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden in Olinda. When in bloom the rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, cherries and daffodils create a sea of colour, but seasonal changes ensure the garden is a delight to visit all year round. And then there’s the Californian Redwood Forest in Warburton. Home to almost 1,500 towering giants (some of which stand at almost 55 metres tall), it’s a truly extraordinary place to explore.

Signature dishes

Don’t let the impressive amount of top-notch wineries, breweries and distilleries fool you – the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges are as much a playground for foodies as they are for discerning drinkers, and these are some of the must-eat dishes. First up is the arrosto di agnello at Zonzo Estate. This heavenly combo of slow cooked lamb in wine and mushrooms with roast potatoes is a winner, and pairs best with the winery’s estate shiraz. At Yarra Valley Dairy you can’t go past the baked cheese, which is served alongside sliced figs, nuts, a drizzle of maple syrup and some crusty sourdough. Head to TarraWarra Estate for a tasty double act: the Buxton trout with pomelo, zucchini and a smoked broth followed by a macadamia tart with jasmine rice cream and koji caramel. And for a sweet treat that’s worth the drive alone, make your way to Coombe Yarra Valley for the peach melba – a modern take on a classic dessert made using peaches from the property’s orchard and local raspberries.

We hope you’ve got plenty of room in your car, because there’s no way you’re leaving the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges without filling it with wine, fresh produce and goodies from some of the region’s finest boutique shops. Make a beeline for the magical Leaf Studios and Gallery in Kallista if you’re in the market for quirky ceramics, handmade jewellery and original art. You can even have an oracle card reading or healing session here. Love a cuppa? Go to Tea Leaves in Sassafras – you can’t miss it thanks to the Alice in Wonderland-inspired mural on the side of the building – and stock up on everything from teapots to tea leaves, mugs and infusers. Also in Sassafras is Geppetto’s Workshop, a charming puppet and toy store. Browse traditional playthings like spinning tops and puzzles, marvel at rocking horses and doll houses, and even try your hand at operating a real European marionette.

Historical gems

Historical gems

Name a more iconic attraction in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges than Puffing Billy Railway, we’ll wait. Considered Australia’s oldest and best-preserved heritage steam railway, it has been in operation since the 1900s and transported more than 11 million people through the lush, leafy landscape of the Dandenong Ranges. Best of all, passengers are once again allowed to sit on the sills of the open-side carriages with their legs hanging out – and yes, it really is as fun as it sounds. Be transported to another world when you visit Montsalvat, an artists’ colony in Eltham. With sprawling grounds, gothic-style buildings and five gallery spaces it’s hard to believe you’re just 30 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD. There are regular exhibitions, concerts and classes, or you can enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant. Another beautiful historic site is Mont De Lancey Homestead in Wandin North. Join one of the YesterYear tours and you’ll get to explore the property and its pristine gardens, plus the chapel, blacksmith’s shop and vintage engine shed.

Memorable accommodation

Memorable accommodation

Ok sure, you can easily visit the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges in one day, but when the accommodation options are this epic, it would be a shame not to indulge in a cheeky overnight stay. Nissen Hut at Glenlowren is a serene little haven nestled in the foothills of the Yarra Valley. The two-bedroom cabin boasts a spacious living/kitchen area and gorgeous views across the gardens and wetlands. Gourmet provisions for a sumptuous breakfast are also included. At Larnook in Kallista, you’ll discover a secluded off-grid hideaway that will allow you to unplug from the outside world and reconnect with nature. You can stay curled up in bed, take an outdoor shower or settle in with a wine at the fire pit – on a clear day you can see all the way to Port Phillip Bay. And for those who love more of a good ol’ bed and breakfast situation, the lodgings at Shaws Road Winery in Arthurs Creek are excellent. There are two self-contained apartments to choose from, each with huge shelves filled with books, a clawfoot bath and private balcony.
