The Smithsonian’s annual Museum Day Live! is just a month away and with it comes the opportunity for families to visit cultural institutions around the country for free. Following the Smithsonian’s free admission policy, participating museums will open their doors free of charge on September 23, making this the perfect time for families to visit cool spots they’ve been holding off on. Checking all that NYC museums have to offer can start to add up when you’ve got little ones in tow, and Museum Day Live! not only makes these visits affordable, but also more than worth your while. Many venues have special activities during the event!

For this year’s festivities, Microsoft has created a special interactive lesson using Minecraft: Education Edition that museums can use to complement their Museum Day Live! programs. It’s sure to be a fun and educational day for all ages and a cool way to explore local museums. For the full scoop, check out our piece on Museum Day Live! and participating museums.

To download a Museum Day Live! ticket that grants you and a guest admission to one museum, visit smithsonianmag.com beginning August 25th at midnight.

If you can’t participate in this year’s event, there are still many free museum days for kids at NYC museums so don’t let your schedule keep you from visiting the best children’s museums in the city.
