Three little sheep will soon live in this NYC churchyard

If you can’t get the kids to the farm, let the farm come to you. Three little sheep will soon migrate south from Elizaville, NY to call the Basilica of Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral their home and graze on the church’s grass. Trios of ewes have been helping maintain the landscape at the Nolita church for the past four years and families will be able to see the fluffy residents for six weeks.

According to The New York Times, the idea to bring in a mini flock of sheep came about after the basilica’s groundskeeper decided to retire. When Reverend Monsignor Donald Sakano received the news, he joked, “What do you expect me to do now, get sheep?” He quickly realized that maybe it wasn’t such a crazy idea after all.

⛪️ Ready to welcome Faith, Hope and Charity? Join us this Sunday as we say hello to our 3 new woolly friends from White Barn Farm in New Paltz, NY. The sheep will be able to enjoy 35,000 sq. feet of green space all to themselves, with no competition from the flock back home. Can't make it to see the sheep in person? Donate $1, $2, or $3 through @spotfund to help us care for the sheep through these warm summer months. The sheep will munch on grass and live in a fenced-in area in the churchyard while wearing protective coats to keep their wool clean. No word yet on what this year’s crew will be named, but the monikers of past sheep trios have included Faith, Hope and Charity; Elizabeth, Mott and Mulberry; and Myrrh, Gold and Frankincense.

These aren’t the only cuddly farm animals that have taken the place of lawnmowers and weed wackers in the city. This past May, Prospect Park introduced its newest herd of goats that help remove invasive weeds and restore the landscape. The four goats were named Max, Unicorn, Cinnamon and Swirl.
