Can't get your kiddo away from the microscope? Think you have a future engineer on your hands? Harness that passion this summer with a little help from NYC.

The Department of Education is offering a chance for public school students in kindergarten through 12th grade to attend STEM summer programs for free. Courses for STEM Matters NYC vary, as do the venues. Locations that are participating include the New York Aquarium, the Central Park Zoo, the Queens Zoo and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, among many others. Vacation just got way more exciting (truthfully, we're a bit bummed that these offerings do not include adults).

As awesome as it is to start planning your kid's week in the junior oceanographer or eco adventures class, there are a few things to keep in mind. For one, if you are interested in applying, you have to act very quickly. Applications are due Apr 6. The camps will be held throughout July and August, and the options include one-week classes, internships for high school students and even college credit-bearing courses for four weeks.

If your kiddo has been lucky enough to win the lottery, he or she must attend all days of the camp program, according to the application. MetroCards will be provided, should the student need them, but bus transportation is not available. Additionally, STEM Matters NYC will not provide meals, so your child is going to have to brown paper bag it during the program.

School might not be in session, but that doesn't mean the learning has to stop. Best of luck to your budding scientist and mathematicians during the application process.
