Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is getting a new splash park

It might seem like a distant memory—considering we've been treated to weekly nor'easters as of late—but the dog days of summer in NYC can be pretty intense. One Queens park is looking to reinvent its grounds so that visitors can cool off a bit when the temperatures soar, and we can't wait to get the beach towels ready.

Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is currently undergoing a makeover, and its Reflecting Pool, Fountain of the Fairs Center and Large Fountains are being repurposed for visitors. Currently, the park is in the procurement phase of the project, according to the NYC Parks Department, and the Reflecting Pool is being reconstructed.

The Fountain, which was once a quiet feature, will receive a little pizazz, according to the Parks Department. It was originally constructed as part of the 1964 World’s Fair, but will now transform into a mist garden with a cooling cloud that will rise up to five feet above the surface. How nice is that going to feel once we get closer to triple digit temperatures? Can the kiddos make room for us?

For those who are concerned that the updates will disregard NYC history, fear not. The project will pay homage to the World's Fair with an art deco paving pattern, per the community's suggestion. You and your little ones will be able to soak up the sun and relive the past, in a sense; Its a dose of old and new.

The procurement phase is set for completion by September of this year. From there, the final phase—construction—will take about 12–18 months. Though there is still a ways to go before the final unveiling of the reconstruction, we certainly can't wait for a place for our little ones to cool off after a summer day in the park.
