It looks like NYC kids are on Santa's nice list this year.

Students are beginning the holiday season on a high note with an extra day off from school. Merry Christmas, indeed!

The New York City Department of Education has now canceled class on Monday, Dec 23. The original one-day school week was met with criticism, according to NY1, and the DOE has decided to take action.

"Every year, we work towards a calendar that meets the needs of students and families. In response to feedback, we have adjusted the 2019-20 School Calendar and @NYCschools will close on December 23, 2019," the department says in a tweet.

This means families have an extra day to participate in fun winter activities for kids. You'll need those extra 24 hours, as NYC plans to become a winter wonderland. Between a lengthy list of festivals (the largest lantern fest in North America is coming to Citi Field), fun Christmas events for kids and generous amounts of hot chocolate in NYC that require consumption, you will most likely be plenty busy on Dec 23.

Be sure to take a look at the NYC 2019–2020 school calendar for more information.
