Let's face it: NYC families pay a premium for access to the best family attractions, children's museums and all of the other great stuff this city has to offer, but is it the most expensive place to raise kids in the United States? You'd be surprised.

Believe it or not, New York doesn't actually top the list of Market Watch's priciest picks. With data drawn from the Economic Policy Institute, Market Watch reported in August that for families with two parents and two children, Washington D.C. was actually most expensive per year. Factors taken into consideration included average costs for housing, health care, child care, transportation, food and other necessities. See the ten most expensive picks below:

1. Washington, DC: A family of four needs roughly $106,493 to get by.

2. Nassau/Suffolk County, NY: $103,606

3. Westchester County, NY: $99,592

4. New York, NY: $98,722

5. Stamford/Norwalk, CT: $97,350

6. Honolulu, HI: $94,092

7. Poughkeepsie/Middletown/Newburgh, NY: $92,837

8. Ithaca, NY: $92,603

9. San Francisco, CA: $91,785

10. Danbury, CT: $89,000
