When will schools reopen? Here's what you need to know about NYC Schools

At-home schooling just might be the new normal.

When it comes to reopening NYC Schools this September, Chancellor Richard Carranza is keeping an open mind.

He believes there is a 50-50 chance of NYC public school buildings reopening in the fall, allowing for the possibility that remote learning will continue into the next academic year, according to the New York Post. The chancellor is also open to students attending schools on alternate days so that classrooms have enough space for social distancing, according to NY1.

Press Secretary Miranda Barbot confirmed that NYC Schools will consider all options. Essentially, everything is on the table in these unprecedented times.

That open-minded approach has been the policy of the NYC DOE as it responded to the entire state being put on pause: Over one weekend, the nation's largest school district abruptly pivoted to become the nation's largest homeschool district. Since then, thousands of iPads have been distributed for remote learning (eligible NYC School students can apply for one here), grading policy has changed as all elementary classes are now pass/fail, Regents Exams have been canceled and more. Even the pomp and circumstance of finishing high school will take place online with a city-wide virtual graduation.

This safety-first approach prioritizes the wellness of the city's students and their families, but it doesn't make it easy on parents working at home, or essential workers who need to go out and do their jobs. One upside? No need to go overboard with the DIY haircuts for a kid who's staying in.
