Ah, fall has finally arrived. And we figured the best way to usher in the new season is with something new of our own. Of course, we are talking about the latest and greatest, Time Out Market New York, Union Square. Opening its doors just last month, the neighborhood market has gathered seven of the finest culinarians in Manhattan, and so far, dining has looked a little something like fire-flamed kebabs, sandwiches plied with Italian ingredients, and bowls of fried rice with copious amounts of crab. And while we can certainly wax poetic about the talent in the kitchens, and we certainly have, we would be remiss not to mention the minds behind the bar.
A central feature of our market, the concrete 360-degree bar houses a little bit of everything for imbibers of all kinds. Crafted cocktails? Check. Wines that start at $12? Check. Beers on tap and in cans? Check, check and check. But if you are the type who needs to plan their drink order before they step up to the counter, here’s a lineup of what to drink at Time Out Market New York, Union Square.
RECOMMENDED: Five reasons to visit Union Square’s latest food hall
We couldn’t open a new food hall with a little celebration for our latest, now could we? So we drummed up the cheekily named Thyme Square ($14), a rum-and-blackberry-thyme smash, perfect for pounding on our back patio while the weather is still decent. The tequila-based Manhattenhenge ($15) also seems ripe for the weather, with Cazadores, a sweet and citrusy splash of Italicius, blood orange, lime and a sprig of thyme. But when things really start to cool, there is nothing like a little bourbon in hand. And a bit of bourbon with warming spices mixed in? Count us in. If that sounds like the ultimate fall drink to you as well, then cozy up to the Broadway and Bourbon ($15) with Marker’s Mark, a few dashes of chocolate bitters and a cinnamon stick for stirring.
Of course, the classics are always called for. But naturally, we had to put our spin on those, too. For a riff on a Moscow Mule, try the Borough Buck ($15), a Grey Goose and pomegranate juice tippler, kicked with lime, mint and a splash of ginger beer. Looking for something a little bitter? The negroni-esque Dream in Red ($14) is just the thing, with Bombay Sapphire and Campari, sweet vermouth and a splash of cranberry and lemon juice.
Meanwhile, the Flatiron Twist ($14) draws similarities to a French Gimlet with Bombay Sapphire, floral notes from St-Germain, plus kiwi and a little soda water. And for a marg backed by a bit of smoke, the mezcal-based The Smoking Lady ($16) brings the fire with Dos Hombres mezcal, balanced with pear, rosemary and lime, rimmed with pink salt. And it wouldn’t be a cocktail list without the “it” drink of the moment: Espresso Martini. Staying true to form, the martini uses a combo of vodka, cold brew and coffee liqueur, shaken for a bit of foam and topped with espresso beans.
Thanks to our partnership with Lion King, we have two cocktails on order that will make you feel like the king of Pride Rock. Available until the end of this month is the Lion’s Pride, a bourbon-based drink shaken with amaro, ginger and lemon. November brings the King of the Jungle with Patron tequila, cantaloupe, bell pepper and lime.
And if cocktails really aren’t your style, we have a list of wines, beers and some NA options in the mix. Looking to swirl and sip? We have our very own trio of wines to pour—Time Out Market Rosé, Time Out Market White and Time Out Market Red—all starting at the $12 mark. The list continues with selections by the glass or by the bottle, pulled from wineries in California to vineyards in the far reaches of Italy and France. Next to domestic beers, local favorites are also in rotation, including suds from Sloop Brewing from Hudson Valley and Brooklyn’s Other Half Brewing.
Thirsty? Us too. So come on down to the market to quench your thirst. Even better, make a visit during happy hour, held every day from 2pm-7pm, for $5 pints of beer, $9 glasses of wine and select cocktails for just $10. Cheers!
