The sexiest films according to Singaporean filmmakers

Besides turning up the heat with steamy scenes on the big (or small) screen, most R-rated films touch on taboo topics of intimacy, attraction, and lust. And with today’s more innovative form of storytelling, the definition of what is and isn’t a sex movie has never been broader. An erotic act of intense passion does not necessarily equate to a sexy film. Even a decent (read: fully clothed) tryst between a forbidden couple – throw in some baby-making tunes and sultry voices in the mix – can bring about sexy thoughts.

Ultimately, sexiness is more than being hornt up. It can be depicted in various ways and through different emotions. Just ask Eric Khoo, Glen Goei, and Kirsten Tan who, among other local filmmakers, share with us the movies that turn them on.

RECOMMENDED: 40 best Singapore films of all time and the best upcoming films in Singapore

In the Mood for Love (2000)

In the Mood for Love (2000)

Selected by Glen Goei
Known for Revenge of the Pontianak (2019), The Blue Mansion (2009), and Forever Fever (1998)

“It was a tough decision between two of my favourite movies – Lust, Caution and In the Mood for Love – but Wong Kar Wai’s romantic film wins because the sex scene didn’t even make it on screen and was left to the audience’s imagination. The passion and sexual chemistry between Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung was off the charts!”

Also Selected by Tan Wei Keong
Known for short films including Pifuskin

"Real, loveable strangers in close quarters make an enchanting story. Left a deep mark on what love means."

Somewhere in Time (1980)

Somewhere in Time (1980)

Selected by Eric Khoo
Known for Mee Pok Man, 12 Storeys, My Magic, and HBO Asia original series Folklore

“Star-crossed lovers, time travel, fate, destiny, a love that transcends all, good looking leads and a score which stirs not just the heart but also the loins.”

Show Me Love (1998)

Show Me Love (1998)

Selected by Kirsten Tan
Known for Pop Aye (2017), and short films including Dahdi (2015)

"The debut feature film of Swedish filmmaker Lukas Moodysson (director of Lilya 4-ever), F-ing Åmål (Show Me Love) is a poignant, honest and coming of age examination of first love. It’s a queer 90's cinematic gem whose lead female characters purportedly inspired the formation of infamous Russian lesbian band t.A.T.u."

Selected by Nicole Midori Woodford

Little Forest (2018)

Selected by Gladys Ng
Known for short films including My Father After Dinner

“What’s sexier than an independent woman living in peaceful solitude, growing and cooking her own food in an idealised country life? Also, there’s lots of food porn."

Water Lilies (2007)

Water Lilies (2007)

Selected by Tan Siyou
Known for short films including 2200 Volts

"A tender, perfect bonbon of a film. Not meant to be a downer for V-Day, but it’s a celebration that you've grown out – of peeking timidly into your crush's classroom (the agony!) and darting away when your eyes meet (damn it!). Unrequited first love is delightful territory."

The Piano (1993)
Photograph: The Piano

The Piano (1993)

Selected by Kris Ong
Known for short films including Sunday

“A mute Holly Hunter. A distant land. A piano. A stuffy Sam Neill and a “local native” Harvey Keitel. 19th-century repression. A haunting enigma of a film that boldly swims in the eros and pleasures of the heart."

Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts (2017)

Selected by Mysara Aljaru
Known for short films including Suaraku Bukan Dosamu (My Voice is Not Your Sin)

"While the movie (aka Marlina Si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak) is not sexy in the conventional sense, it is, in my humble opinion, one of the best movies to come out of the region. Many have described it as “Satay Western”, and while I think that this movie is uniquely Indonesian, it still has the ability to appeal to a universal audience. Not to forget, the stunning shots and soundtracks that match perfectly to the feel of the film. And for women, it definitely is the feminist film to watch for us!"

Magic Mike XXL (2015)

Magic Mike XXL (2015)

Better than its predecessor, Magic Mike XXL rejoins with Mike (Channing Tatum) trying to build up his construction business after leaving the stripper life three years ago. With his business nosediving and his long-term relationship ending quickly, Mike reunites with his male stripper for one last hurrah at a stripper convention in Myrtle Beach.

With well-timed dance moves and chiselled abs, Magic Mike XXL becomes a heartwarming and saucy road trip comedy adventure for those who love hyper-masculine men with hearts of gold. Sequences like Mike’s friend Big Dick Richie (Joe Manganiello) performing a racy dance to Backstreet Boys’ I Want It That Way to make a gas attendant look up from her phone is instantly iconic and sexy.

Sook-Hee happens to be a thief who tries to swindle her new boss out of her fortune. However, things take a turn for the better when Sook-Hee and Hideko discover their desires for one another. Sex Education (2019)

Sex Education (2019)

Forward-thinking, diverse and fun, you’ll find yourself emotionally invested in each and every character in this quirky series. This popular British comedy-drama primarily focuses on the discomfort of teenage sexuality, and it follows a group of students who create an “underground” sex therapy clinic to help other kids with their relationship woes.

Now in its third season, you’ll find that the portrayal of sex in this show is utterly realistic in a way that you’ll find yourself cringeing and laughing. Some parts of it can also be pretty hot. An excellent choice for a date night pick: you’ll chuckle and maybe, become a little bit aroused.

American Pie (1999)
Photograph: IMDb

American Pie (1999)

We probably won't see a phenomenon like American Pie again. The raunchy sex comedy gives a hysterical look at obnoxious high schoolers making an ultimate pact: losing their virginity by prom night. Watch as they manipulate their way into the hearts of some girls, and fail spectacularly. One manages to score with a hot foreign exchange student, and then ditches her at the end with a band member who knows her way with the flute. Another guy desperately hires someone to make up rumours about him, building himself a “reputation” among schoolmates. Sit back and enjoy this hit comedy and, oh, you’ll also never look at warm apple pie the same way again.

Filled with sex, money, and attention from the authorities and crime syndicates, The Naked Director is a balance between sex comedy and action-packed underworld narrative combined with pornographic revolution. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

We all know that the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise is basically low-key softcore porn. This modern-day erotic drama is great to watch during Valentine’s Day, together with your significant other. The film follows a straight-laced student, Anastasia (Dakota Johnson), interviewing the handsome and wealthy Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), and it’s attraction at first sight for them both. They find themselves entangled in a toxic yet extremely intense and passionate affair. She finds herself being controlled by Grey, but when he introduces her to the dark world and kinky tastes, she begins to explore her own desires for the first time.

This show may certainly give you a few ideas on how to spice up your bedroom activities by trying out new moves, just to bring that extra bit of passion back into your relationship.

A fresh perspective on historical romance, the series is based on Julia Quinn’s epic eight-part romance novel series of the same name. Taking place in the early part of the 19th century, the film is concerned with the romantic entanglements of society’s upper crust. The Netflix drama is addictive to watch, and it is full of stolen glances and whispered rumours, scandals and seductions, wounded pride and star-crossed love, lavish balls and string quartet renditions of songs.

It starts with PG scenes of many period pieces until the two main characters Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Bassett tie the knot. Now that they are free to consummate, viewers get a tasty treat when the couple cannot get their hands off of each other as they have sex in the open field, in the rain and even on a ladder.
