If you ask us, there are already a whole heap of reasons to visit NewcastleArno Deli being one of them. And now, there’s another big drawcard to add to the list – with a new world-class indoor arena officially in the works. The NSW Government has just committed $14 million towards the next stage of planning for Newcastle Arena – here’s what we know so far.

The proposed Newcastle Arena will have capacity for 12,000 people and is expected to host up to 160 events each year – from big-act concerts and touring comedians to major sporting fixtures and family shows. The shiny new arena will replace the existing Newcastle Entertainment Centre, which first opened more than three decades ago as a temporary venue (intended to have a lifespan of just five years). Instead of refurbishing the ageing building, the new arena will be constructed alongside McDonald Jones Stadium, creating a first-rate entertainment precinct.

According to the NSW Government, the arena is the first major piece of a much broader redevelopment planned for Broadmeadow. Alongside the venue, the precinct is expected to eventually include hotels, commercial spaces, new housing, green open spaces, improved cycling and walking paths, better transport connections and a new outdoor events plaza. Combined with the recently opened Newcastle International Airport, the project aims to cement Newcastle as one of regional Australia's leading visitor destinations (we called it: the Time Out team named Newcastle a hidden gem way back in 2024).

As you’d imagine, the economic impact could be huge. The government estimates the arena will create more than 600 construction jobs, support hundreds more ongoing positions and inject around $400 million into the NSW economy over the next decade. It's also expected to drive a big increase in interstate visitors, with major concerts and sporting events bringing new crowds to the region year-round.

Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley described the project as "the first piece of the puzzle" in transforming Broadmeadow into a world-class sport, entertainment and lifestyle precinct.

"This is a major vote of confidence in Newcastle and the Hunter," she said. "It means more concerts, more visitors, more jobs and more to love about our region."

While there's no opening date just yet, the funding announcement marks a major step towards making the venue a reality.

We’ll keep you posted as the project progresses. In the meantime, you can plan your visit to Newcastle Entertainment Centre over here.
