If you’re familiar with landing in Sydney feeling like a crumpled boarding pass – stiff, bleary-eyed and desperate for a stretch – we’ve got good news, especially for the city’s frequent flyers. Australia’s first airport gym has officially touched down at Sydney Airport.

Fitness giant Anytime Fitness has opened a brand-new club inside the international terminal, giving travellers, airline crew and airport staff a place to move, sweat and shake off the effects of long-haul travel. The gym opened on March 11 inside Terminal 1, bringing round-the-clock workouts to one of the busiest transport hubs in the country.

Located landside (before arrivals security) at the international terminal, the new facility is designed to help people reset before or after a flight – whether that means squeezing in a quick pre-departure workout, stretching out after a red-eye or (for airline staff) fitting in a session between shifts. Considering more than 40 million passengers and 30,000 staff move through the airport each year, there’s clearly no shortage of people who could use a good stretch.

The purpose-built gym spans two levels and 300 square metres, with 24/7 access. Inside, you’ll find functional training zones geared towards mobility and recovery, plus premium Life Fitness and Hammer Strength equipment, two lifting platforms, and showers for travellers who want to freshen up before heading onward.

To help flyers feel a little less like pretzels after hours in the air, Anytime Fitness has also created a trio of “Fit to Fly” workouts. Developed by the brand’s trainers, the routines focus on simple movements designed to keep circulation flowing and muscles moving through the different stages of travel. According to Anytime Fitness’s national fitness and member experience manager Ben Richards, the exercises are intentionally low-impact but effective – aiming to combat stiffness, reduced mobility and the general physical toll of long-haul travel.

Access is free for Anytime Fitness members, and a one-time pass costs $35. Find out more here
