The new $836 million Sydney Fish Market has finally opened – hurrah!

But what is to become of the old Sydney Fish Market site?

More than a year ago, the NSW government announced that the iconic Blackwattle Bay institution will be demolished to make way for a mixed-use precinct.

The grand plans include 1,400 new homes, including 580 student housing units in towers up to 35 storeys, a boardwalk that connects to the new Sydney Fish Market, commercial and retail spaces, and a 15 km foreshore walk that will stretch from Rozelle Bay to Woolloomooloo.

While there has been some pushback from local residents around the scale of the project, the promise of more affordable housing makes this a positive step forward for the city’s property woes.

With the first homes in the new precinct slated for a 2028 completion, Planning and Public Spaces Minister Paul Scully said this project is an exciting step forward for housing in Sydney.

“The old Sydney Fish Market site offers a unique opportunity for new homes in a central location, close to the CBD, public transport, public spaces and good amenity,” he said.

“Early stages of the project will deliver a generous foreshore promenade and an overwater boardwalk, creating new public spaces for everyone to enjoy.”
