The July full moon (the Buck Moon) will rise above NSW next week

Watching a full moon rise into a clear night sky is easily one of the most magical things we humans get to witness every single month, and if you missed June's Strawberry Moon, you still have six more chances to experience this spectacle in 2026 – with the next full moon set to peak in Australia on Thursday, July 30. Known as the Buck Moon, July’s full moon is the second-highest and dimmest of the year. When to see the July 2026 full moon (the Buck Moon) in Sydney?

The Buck Moon will officially reach peak roundness in the very early hours of Thursday, July 30 – at 12.35am here in NSW. While it technically peaks just after midnight, we expect viewing windows will be best after sunset on both Wednesday, July 29 and Thursday, July 30. What is the Buck Moon?

July’s full moon is traditionally called the Buck Moon by Native American tribes, marking the time of year when young male deer in the Northern Hemisphere begin growing their new antlers. While the seasonal meaning isn't really relevant for us in the Southern Hemisphere, we love that every full moon has its own unique story.

How to see the July full moon (the Buck Moon) in Sydney and NSW?

Although it’s the second-highest full moon of the year (behind June’s Strawberry Moon), the Buck Moon will be easily visible to the naked eye – provided the weather plays along.
