The city is beginning to open back up, and plenty of us are enjoying those pleasures we once took for granted, like eating out at our favourite restaurants and grabbing a cold one down at the pub. However, Sydney’s hospitality industry has a long way to go to recoup from the sudden lockdowns that came into place in March. Additionally, many more people aren’t quite ready to get back into the swing of our cosmopolitan lives of the Beforetime, and current restrictions still make it difficult for small businesses to operate at a profit.

This is where Save Our Locals comes in – an online marketplace where you can order freshly made meal kits from local restaurants and cafés for home delivery. You can support your local community while recreating easily prepared gourmet meals at home.

Depending on how hands-on you want to get, you can choose between ‘heat-at-home’ dishes and ‘learn as you go’ signature specials. You can search by restaurant name or food type, making it easy to pinch those cravings for the perfect sandwich, bowl of curry, or whatever strikes your fancy.

Save Our Locals has the support of Luke Mangan from modern Australian eatery Luke’s Kitchen (you can order kits for meals like Luke’s spiced chicken pie with mash and peas, $49.95), slick ‘village-inspired’ Indian restaurant Indu (serve up a banquet with the deluxe feast box for $80, or the classic feast box for $60) and high-end Mexican joint Mejico (the deluxe meal box, $80, includes the signature guacamole and corn ribs). Other restaurants on Save Our Locals include Sydney Cebu Lechon, the city’s home of charcoal roast pork; and elevated sushi from Zushi Barangaroo

The hospitality industry has been the hardest hit by the recent and ongoing public health crisis, with a staggering 82 per cent of hospitality jobs lost, as reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Every meal kit purchased from Save Our Locals helps to keep the lights on in local kitchens and to keep staff in work. The platform is free for restaurants to use, made possible by leading industry experts and partners, meaning the money from your purchase goes directly into supporting your locals.
