The JW Marriott’s lobby bar has a new look, new drinks and good ambience
We’re going to be honest: the red velvet curtains that the old Q88 Wine Bar sported until recently was pretty tired, to say the least. Recently refurbished and reconceptualised, the space behind JW Marriott’s Lounge restaurant is now a sleek place to chill. With exposed concrete walls, lower lighting and more space, the formality of the previous bar has been gutted and replaced with a much more amicable ambience.
We start with a Ginger Meggs Old Fashioned ($130) and the mixture of Ballentine’s 12-year, gingerbread syrup, chocolate bitters, Angostura bitters and water results in a smooth, fragrant drink with almost candy-like qualities. Why there’s a need for water in the recipe is a mystery. Even though the flavour profile is pleasant, we feel a stronger kick of Ballentine’s would’ve given the drink greater character. For our next choice we opt for a Nutty Smash ($110), a mix of Frangelico, vodka, prosecco and lime juice garnished with mint leaves. The nuttiness of the Frangelico is enhanced by the citrus flavours and results in a refreshing cocktail with an interesting front-end. We thoroughly enjoy this.
There aren’t any overarching themes at Bar Q88, but they’re not necessary. Its casual interiors and solid lineup of cocktails make it an easy hang out, and that’s all that’s required.
