There’s big news afoot in the Hong Kong food scene. Acclaimed pastry chef-slash-Cronut creator Dominique Ansel just dropped a sugar-laden bomb when he broke the news on his Instagram account that Hong Kong will be home to his next project.
In a cryptic post geotagged in Hong Kong, Ansel made a recruiting pitch for senior-level management positions while promising his new project was “Not the Cronut. Something new altogether.” What that means is anyone’s guess.

The French-born, James Beard Award-winning pastry chef rocketed to fame after he opened his namesake bakery in New York in 2011. Since coming up with the croissant-doughnut hybrid that Time magazine called one of the “25 Best Inventions of 2013,” Ansel has branched out a bit. He launched Dominique Ansel Kitchen in New York’s West Village, itself a hybrid with a retail bakery and restaurant service kitchen, as well as other bakeries in Tokyo, London and Los Angeles. Ansel also opened his first proper restaurant, 189 by Dominique Ansel, in Los Angeles.
Word on the street is that Ansel’s Hong Kong venture will open in Tsim Sha Tsui in Q4 of this year. While we wait for more details on what is sure to be one of the sweetest openings of 2019, we might as well warm up by revisiting some of Hong Kong's top local bakeries and cakes shops.
