For the first time since opening its flagship hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui in 1981, Hong Kong’s iconic Royal Garden hospitality brand is expanding. Tseung Kwan O is now home to The Royal Garden Kowloon East, just minutes away from the MTR station, marking the brand’s second property launched and developed by Sun Hung Kai Properties. Read on for a peek into this brand-new hotel and what you can expect out of a staycation!

Formerly occupied by the Crowne Plaza Hong Kong Kowloon East by IHG, the interiors of this high-rise hotel have been transformed by LAAB Architects, designed with aesthetics that speak to a modern generation of travellers – namely, millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha. Built as a contemporary “urban resort”, the 366-key hotel is imagined as an “oasis of calm” in the city, leaning on nature inspirations and eco-conscious design to create a soothing space coloured in olive and apricot tones.

Designed for kids and pets

Guests will have several room categories to choose from, including the Urban Oasis Room, Accessible Room, Sunrise Vista Corner Room, and Moonlit Horizon Suite. Families with children will love the purpose-built Junk Bay Kids’ Den, which comes with themed play areas and bunk beds; the Family Fortress, with two lofted single bunks and one king bed; or the Horizon Family Suite, which can sleep up to four persons. Another bit of good news: this hotel is pet-friendly, and the seven Horizon Retreat Villas are set aside as pet-friendly accommodations for up to two guests and their four-legged friends!

Chill out at the Garden Lounge, with an outdoor garden space dedicated to barbecues, let the kids run wild at Giggle Hill, a children’s play zone, or grab baked goods, sweet treats, and coffee at the Fine Foods Lounge. The Royal Garden Kowloon East also has a 25-metre outdoor pool, a fully equipped fitness centre, and meeting and wedding venues.

Opening dates

Despite pulling back the curtains this month, the hotel is not fully open yet and there are still on-site facilities to be unveiled. The Royal Garden Kowloon East is expected to open in three distinct phases: rooms and suites are now accepting guests, villas and family-focused amenities will come in March, and the final phase will come in July with the grand opening of the Italian all-day dining restaurant, Ponentino, which takes inspiration from the award-winning Sabatini Ristorante Italiano at The Royal Garden. Ponentino will be located on the top floor of the hotel with rooftop access and an outdoor terrace, offering a refreshing perspective of the surrounding area and fabulous sunset views.
