There’s no middle ground when it comes to Fugglers. Depending on who you ask, they’re either the most endearing little companions or the stuff of nightmares. Whatever your stance is, these toothy terrors have just secured their first permanent home in Hong Kong with a flagship opening at Hysan Place.

In case you can’t tell from its name, or have somehow not seen one dangling off of someone’s bag, a Fuggler is not your typical bedtime buddy. Born from the imagination of British artist Louise McGettrick in 2010, Fuggler (Funny Ugly Monster) is famously disturbing. Defined by their human-like dentures, vacant mismatched eyes, and a signature ‘butt-on’ hole, these creatures are designed to be the misfits that don’t blend in. Sure, they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but beyond their absurd looks, Fugglers also carry a message that encourages fans to embrace their weirdness in a world obsessed with perfection.

The new flagship in Causeway Bay is dedicated to this philosophy, and it’s packed with collections that are available for the first time in the city. The Fugg Nuggets collection reimagines the monsters as golden, crispy chicken nuggets, while the Alley Cats series features feline pranksters that radiate ‘healing vibes’ by day and chaos by night. There is also the Chunky Fuggs jungle mission series, where the monsters attempt to go undercover as axolotls, hippos, and capybaras with what the brand describes as “the world’s worst camouflage skills”.

Collectors will find more than just plushies on the shelves, as the flagship is also stocking a range of Hong Kong exclusives and highlights, including a Fuggler silk scarf, Y2K DIY kits, phone cases, and various crossbody bags.

To celebrate the opening, there are a few perks to keep on your radar. For an exclusive Hong Kong edition fridge magnet, simply follow the brand’s official Instagram (@fugglerofficial.hk), snap a photo in-store or showcase your personal Fuggler outfit, tag the brand and add #FugglerHK, then show it to a member of staff to get your free gift (available while stocks last). There are also tiered rewards for those looking to start a collection: spend $139 or more to earn a plush keychain or blind box; over $499 to receive a medium-sized plush; or more than $999 to snag that Hong Kong exclusive silk scarf for free.
