Yup, you’ve read that right. Hong Kong top fencer Ryan Choi Chun-yin is now officially stepping into the music scene. The athlete, who made history in 2025 as Hong Kong’s first fencing world champion, has officially released his first solo single, My Most Hated Male Singer – and the internet seems to be loving it.

Pulling together industry heavyweights, Choi’s track (self-funded, by the way) is composed by singer-songwriter Phil Lam, with lyrics by the legendary Wyman Wong, and production by Edward Chan. For a complete music newbie who readily admits he knows nothing about the industry, Choi has described the process as somewhat surreal, especially coming from an elite sports background where focus is usually narrow and intense.

He’s no total beginner when it comes to performing, though. Last year, Choi joined his university roommate and boy group Mirror member Edan Lui on stage at a concert to cover iconic songs by Jay Chou and Jason Chan. The crowd loved it – some netizens even called out for him to debut right there and then – and Edan has been cheering him on ever since. Now, Choi is taking on that side quest, using over six figures to fund the single himself simply because he loves music.

Online reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with fans expressing support for the track and his vocals. Some are even hoping he performs it at next year’s Ultimate Song Chart Awards! Choi’s single is now available on major streaming platforms if you want to give it a listen, or you can check it out below:
