To celebrate what would have been Leslie Cheung’s 70th birthday, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum (HKHM) in Sha Tin is opening its doors to a massive retrospective that revisits Gor-gor’s legendary career in music and film.
Running from September 9 through to May 10, the ‘Miss You Much · Leslie 70th Birthday · Exhibition’ features more than 300 items gathered for the display, retrieved from both the venue’s own archives and private collections generously loaned by those who knew him best, including his former partner Daffy Tong and close friend Florence Chan.
Among the standout pieces are 11 iconic stage costumes that capture the effortless charisma Cheung brought to the stage – from the dazzling gold jacket, sequin top, and purple striped trousers worn during his 1997 shows to the bold mesh vest and face-print trousers from the ‘Passion Tour’ concert in Malaysia in 2000. Visitors will also get the rare opportunity to view items displayed publicly for the very first time, including his personal furniture, rare photos from music videos, and beautiful portraits created by local artists.
The organisers have also brought in Cheung’s interior designer to recreate parts of his former home inside the exhibition, inviting visitors into a more intimate setting where they can get to know Gor-gor beyond the limelight.
During the exhibition period, the museum will be putting on free screenings of six classic films starring Cheung – including Behind the Yellow Line, For Your Heart Only, A Better Tomorrow, A Chinese Ghost Story, Rouge, and He’s a Woman, She’s a Man – along with a special screening of Cheung’s ‘Live in Concert 97’ towards the end of the year. Film tickets are handed out at noon on the day of each screening at HKHM on a first-come, first-served basis.
Admission to the exhibition is completely free, but if you’re planning to visit on weekends or public holidays, do note that crowd control measures such as timed entry tickets may be issued on busier days to keep queues manageable. There’ll also be a limited stock of poster-style exhibition pamphlets at the museum, so don’t forget to pick one up while you’re there.
