At this new exhibition, playing with your food is encouraged

In November 2024, we all saw, marvelled, and questioned the famous “banana taped to the wall” artwork by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan when it sold for eye-watering millions. ‘Comedian’ has gone down in the annals of history as a commentary on the art world, while also prompting dialogue surrounding food as art and art as food. Well, why not both? At a new cultural event debuting in Hong Kong this Art Month, visual and edible creations are brought together for an immersive experience spotlighting art and food.
Central Yards Edible Art Fair represents the intersection of art, food, culture, and experience, brought to life by events and catering company Feste Group and art consultancy Art-Partners. All of this is sponsored by Central Yards, a major mixed-use development that’s coming to Central Harbourfront as soon as next year. Henderson Land is building on prime real estate beside the Central Ferry Piers; once completed, this “groundscraper” will be home to office, retail, leisure, and event spaces.
From March 26 to April 5, the Central Yards Edible Art Fair will invite visitors to discover a range of unique exhibitions focused around the senses of taste, sight, and sound, and immersive storytelling. Inside a 20,000-square-foot purpose-built tent at the Central Harbourfront Event Space, 10 galleries dedicated to prominent art movements will feature visual installations alongside specially crafted edible creations, making this a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. You’re not just looking at the food either – visitors also get to indulge in nibbles at each artwork!
‘Pop It!’, inspired by neo-pop, features bubble-shaped sculptures and a giant claw machine that visitors can collect an edible confection from. ‘Roll With It’, inspired by Modernism, is built out of colour-block boxes and light panels, and is paired with a sweet and savoury edible ribbon available in a multitude of colours. ‘Drip’, inspired by Expressionism, highlights abstract art and comes with flavoured drinks for visitors to try. ‘Go Bananas!’, which takes inspiration from conceptual art, sees replica fruits taped to the walls, and encourages guests to find and take a miniature edible banana among the art. With plenty more to see and eat, Central Yards Edible Art Fair promises a multi-sensory experience that’s quite unlike anything else taking place during Art Month. Local artists will also be featured in two special galleries dedicated to New Ink and Hong Kong Contemporary Art.
Each ticket ($320-420 for adults, $150-200 for children, $260-340 for students and seniors, $800-1,050 for two adults and two kids) includes access to the 10 galleries and one edible creation per installation. For an additional $208 per person per session, attendees can also join workshops to learn how to make their own edible art. Entries are timed, so plan ahead and choose a date and time slot when making your purchase.
