If you’re a fan of the King of Fruits, then you’ll need to head to The Mira Hong Kong this summer for a veritable feast of unlimited durians. The hotel will present seven types of durians, including varieties that are hard to come by in Hong Kong, as well as street food specialties from Penang.
A durian expert will be on site to freshly crack open the spiky treasures, including beloved varieties such as the custardy smooth Musang King D197; the black horse of durians Blak Thorn D200, which is rarely sold here; the Tupai King D124, which is selling for an eye-watering US$30 per kilogram in Malaysia; the bittersweet XO D24; and the nostalgic Gang Hai D1, which reigned as the global favourite before newer cultivars entered the game. Musang King D197, Golden Bun D13, XO D24, and Mas D101 will be available for an all-you-can-eat frenzy, accompanied by other exotic fruits like mangosteens, rambutans, and cempedak.
Aside from durians, The Mira Hong Kong will also host an unlimited dinner buffet, so arrive hungry! Six live cooking stations inspired by Penang’s famous night market food stalls will whip up bak kut teh herbal bone broth, fried oyster omelette, white curry noodles, satay, char kway teow stir-fried noodles, Malaysian chicken rice, and more delights from Malaysia. There will also be popular hot dishes on the buffet like nasi lemak, beef rendang, rojak salad, and tempoyak ikan patin – savoury catfish in fermented durian paste.
And of course, the durian fever carries over into sweets, with bottomless Malaysian desserts such as onde onde pandan dough balls and ais kacang shaved iced, as well as six treats incorporating durians. Save room for the D198 Golden Phoenix durian choux puff, the D197 Musang King durian pudding, the D24 durian mochi, and more. You’ll probably need some cooling herbal teas after all that heaty fruit, but it’ll be worth it!
The Taste of Malaysia festival is originally slated for July 15 to 18, but even with an additional day added, the event sold out so quickly that The Mira Hong Kong has decided to do a second round of celebrations and feasting from July 30 to August 1. Tickets run for $838 for adults and $588 for children, with Mira Plus members enjoying a 10-percent discount.
Pro tip: If you can’t make the durian buffet, don’t fret, because there will be an afternoon tea buffet at Yamm that also celebrates the spiked fruit, running every weekend from July 19 to August 31.
