The berets. The Eiffel Tower. The sophisticated style. The French are inherently linked to certain trigger words, with food and wine sitting at the top of the list. And let’s give them some credit; they do seem to know how to do many things well, and with a reputation for rich palatable experiences and overall excellence, French cuisine is merely one of them.
Nestled comfortably into a rather buzzing restaurant strip in Kennedy Town, this new joint has found a place to shine. Here you will find typical French fare populating the menu with such favourites as escargot in a garlic herb butter ($150) and coq au vin ($180). Get started with some saucisson or Bayanne Ham and then try the pan-seared foie gras with caramelised seasonal fruit accenting the dish.
The main courses reveal a carnivore’s dream. The rabbit leg ($180) is perfectly cooked and the meat properly falls off the bone and is equally tender to the taste. The dish is presented in the ‘Le Creuset dish’ it is presumably prepared in and seeing the high-end coveted kitchen essential bodes well for a favourable outcome even before your first bite – it just never seems to fail. Finish off the meal with some freshly baked warm and fluffy Madeleines, which are paired with a chocolate mousse ($75 each). Both work in unison and complement each other nicely. The menu provides enough variety – the wine list clearly outnumbers the food options and should helm selected ‘plats principaux’ – but doesn’t make you feel like you are reading the next Danielle Steel novel.
But the ambience is the real scene-stealer here. Maintaining a true bistro vibe, it has ditched the white tablecloths and any hint of pretentiousness. Instead, it promotes a casual setting conducive to a relaxed dining experience. The walls are lined with French signs and knick-knacks, and the back wall showcases the extensive wine list on offer. Let your eyes wander while you wait for your food. The attention to detail is noticeable and, may we add, appreciated. Benna Gold
