Coffee shop and roastery with great brews and a solid menu

Co-founded by 2011 Hong Kong Barista Champion Chan Chak Sum and F&B veteran Benny Leung NOC Coffee Co -  NOC is an acronym for ‘not only coffee’ – has opened it’s third and largest branch and roastery in Sai Ying Pun.

The space is large and airy, filled with natural light spilling in from the floor-to-ceiling windows. The barista’s counter resembles a science lab with pristine white surfaces, state-of-the-art grinders and glass cylinders.

We find a seat among the laptop loners and Instagrammers and take a look at the menu. The choice of beans is simple with only two options, and we order a flat white ($40) using the medium to dark roast blend of Colombian and Brazilian beans. As a flat white is a fairly pedestrian choice, we also order a Fizzpresso ($55) – a brave combination of double espresso, passion fruit, lemon juice and tonic water.

The lunch menu is robust, packed with healthy salads, all-day breakfasts and fruit bowls. The ten grain rice bowl ($98) with 64-degree egg, sautéed mushrooms, seaweed, carrot, cucumber and sesame burdock catches our eye so we order something to munch on too.

The flat white arrives with pretty latte art and lives up to our expectations. It’s rich and chocolatey with a full-bodied smoothness. The Fizzpresso, iced and garnished with a lime wedge, is a good balance of sweetness, acidity, and bitterness with a refreshing fizzy finish, though we suspect it might not be to everyone’s taste.

The rice bowl is light, fresh and well seasoned and the contrasting textures of shredded carrots, fresh cucumber, meaty mushrooms and crispy seaweed keep things interesting. The sweet and sour bamboo shoots stand out and the runny egg acts as a sauce for the dish.

With solid food offerings, great brews and friendly service Noc is a welcome addition to the more sparse end of Sai Ying Pun and a spot we reckon will be bursting at brunch. Sam Sinha

Packed from pedestrian traffic on Des Voeux Road West, with a metallic and cold industrial interior. Not a comfortable or relaxing place at all.
