This autumn, Swire Properties is celebrating the festive season – and its 50th anniversary – with ‘Seasons in Continuum’, a four-part botanical art installation at Taikoo Place. In place until 31 December, the public floral art series is inspired by the company's history of creative placemaking and makes the perfect backdrop for festive Instagram moments.

Since beginning in Quarry Bay in the 1970s, Swire Properties has been a driving force in the neighbourhood's urban regeneration and creative transformation, turning it into a dynamic integrated community. Art aficionados are particularly drawn to the area because the integration of art through the district has been a persistent element in its placemaking and features a curated Artwalk collection, the ArtisTree performance space, and installations such as Paul Cocksedge's "Please Be Seated."

The new 'Seasons in Continuum' installation, set across Taikoo Park and other locations within Taikoo Place, celebrates this legacy. The four artworks in the series were inspired by Swire Properties' origins in Quarry Bay and its community-building journey over the last 50 years. This exclusive collaboration with a Hong Kong-based floral artisan invites the public to rediscover the neighbourhood ahead of the Christmas season.

The creative concept

Kirk Cheng, a Hong Kong-based floral artisan known for his bespoke floral art installation, was tasked with creating this commemorative installation. Using colourful spherical forms as a base, Cheung created his pieces as a metaphorical representation of seasonal change. The installation features four sculptures that were handmade from more than 50 types of fresh, dried, and treated flowers.

“Conceptualising the installation took days of careful planning,” says Cheng. “The most challenging part was planning the installations located outdoors, as we had to make sure they could last for two months. And in terms of choosing the materials, we didn’t want to create any plastic waste, so everything was made with real flowers, but we had to make sure that when they dry, it still looks as nice as before,” he adds.

Journey through time with art

Visitors can begin their immersion into this photogenic installation amidst the pristine landscaped gardens of Taikoo Park. Here, ‘Spectrum’ takes visitors on a visual exploration of the evolution from seed to flower through a striking tapestry of 50 botanical spheres in a vivid palate of primary colours – yellows, reds, and blues.

Continue this journey of artistic discovery with ‘Ripple’, an installation suspended across a fountain on the west side of Taikoo Park. This piece’s concentric floral arrangement – built from 500 bunches of eucalyptus and Limonium flowers, expands outwards from a single point of origin – represents the wide-ranging impact and infinite possibilities of a single plant seed.

Looking into One Island East from Taikoo Park, visitors will see ‘Reflections’, a three-metre-high botanical sphere with a cut-out cross section that reveals a multi-coloured floral core surrounded by mirrors. The mirrors reflect the sphere’s colourful centre five times, a highly symbolic visual detail that is sure to make for some incredible Instagram posts.

From here, head indoors to one of the many linked bridges that connect Taikoo Place. In the glass-topped Lincoln Bridge walkway, visitors can physically immerse themselves in ‘Origination’, a dream-like floral environment that takes inspiration from the shape of a bird’s nest. Painstakingly crafted by hand, the piece incorporates a total of some 600 flowers, signifying the 50 years of continual community-building efforts.

Finish off a festive day out by stopping by the White Christmas Street Fair, the seasonal pop-up centred on Tong Chong Street. Here, visitors will find more artistic décor to snap photos of while enjoying festive food and drink, market stalls selling handicrafts, and lots of surprise gifts and performances. The fair will be raising funds for Operation Santa Claus, the annual charity programme that supports people in need in the local community.
