Time Out says

The last collaboration between director Akira Kurosawa and actor Toshiro Mifune, for which the later won Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival in 1965

Set in the 19th century, an ambitious young doctor (Yuzo Kayama) arrives at a humble village clinic to learn from the local doctor, ‘Red Beard’ (Mifune), what being a doctor really means. Mifune invests his character with a perfect blend of gruff inscrutability and delicate kindness, which, perhaps, is Kurosawas clearest statement of humanism.
