Set in the 19th century, an ambitious young doctor (Yuzo Kayama) arrives at a humble village clinic to learn from the local doctor, ‘Red Beard’ (Mifune), what being a doctor really means. Mifune invests his character with a perfect blend of gruff inscrutability and delicate kindness, which, perhaps, is Kurosawa’s clearest statement of humanism.
