Director Yao Fung-pan’s The Blue Lamp in Winter Night (1975) embellishes the story of Nie Xiaoqian, the beautiful ghostly female lead from Pu Songling's Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, with elements taken from Western horror films, including eerie atmospherics, grotesque make-up and a narrative filled with twists and turns. With its modern sensibilities, Chiang Min’s portrayal of the maiden ghost is a precursor to some of the iconic ghostly roles that would come in the 1980s.
