The Sustainable State: The Future of Government, Economy and Society details the political and economic path large developing economies need to take in a more constrained future.

In this second book, author Chandran Nair shows that the West's market-dominated model will be an ecological and social disaster for the developing world. Instead, development must be directed by a strong central state that can guide the economy, protect the environment, and prioritise meeting its people's basic needs. Development needs to be orientated towards the greatest good: clean drinking water for the many over swimming pools for the few.
