Series one, episode two
Clare Balding confirms her accession to the TV A-list as her talent show reaches its second episode tonight. Intended as a riposte to series showcasing more physical abilities, ‘Britain’s Brightest’ sees competitors demonstrating attributes including emotional intelligence and processing speed in a bid to glean information from a group of strangers. It’s like the intellectual Olympics! Well, sort of. There’s a £50,000 prize at stake for the overall winner of the knockout tournament (tonight is the second heat), but the real test will be whether Balding can bridge the gap between shiny-floor hawker (Davina McCall, say) and over-indulgent matriarch (we’re thinking Sue Barker). She’s certainly earned her chance.
