Young, Mormon and Single

BBC3’s habit of chucking together three apparently unconnected words on the off-chance they’ll add up to a documentary endures. However, even if Mormonism makes you think of asset-stripping, dog-bothering Presidential candidates, this one’s worth a look. The dating game’s a high-stakes affair in the Church of the Latter-Day Saints. Most of us want a life partner but, as the intro to this doc makes clear, a Mormon’s life is theologically worthless without one. Hence, Duck Beach: a Mormon hook-up party where the bikinis are modest, the beer is root and the anxiety goes up to 11. It would be easy to poke fun but instead, the film finds universality in these singleton dilemmas and renders these earnest individuals sympathetic even to those not sharing their spiritual concerns.
