Whenever we visit one of L.A.’s best beaches, we come away wishing we lived there. Sure, you could check into a hotel on the beach, but it’s just not the same. But these beachfront Airbnb rentals—these are probably the closest we’ll ever come to being able to afford an apartment on the water. So we got to searching to pick out some of the best beachfront Airbnbs along the L.A. coastline, from Malibu down to Long Beach.

Before you peruse the list below, there are a couple of things you should know about beachfront rentals in L.A.: For starters, they’re expensive—especially since most of the properties are located in the famously upscale beach city Malibu. That leads us to the second point: Since the Pacific Coast Highway and other oceanfront routes cut pretty close to the coast, that actually pretty significantly limits the number of homes on the ocean-side of the highway. And speaking of: The rugged stretches of coastline along the northern and southern edges of the county may be on the water, but they may not necessarily have beach access.

So with that in mind, we tried to follow a couple of simple rules: All of these Airbnb rentals are right on the beach, meaning you won’t have to cross a road to reach the sand. Similarly, they’re on the beach, whiles rules out most of the clifftop homes in Palos Verdes and some rocky stretches of Malibu. And finally, we tried to keep our picks out of eye-poppingly–priced territory, so we have apartments starting just over $100 a night and nothing over $600 (an obscene price, we know, but you should see how many places there are for double that).

We’re bending one of our rules because this one-bedroom is just too reasonably priced: Technically this ground-floor unit is right around the corner from the beach and you’ll have to cross the Ballona Creek Bike Path to reach the sand. But we’d say that proximity to the bike path, the beach and the restaurants on Culver Boulevard are entirely part of the appeal.

Exploring the best of the scenic city of Malibu doesn't have to cost the earth. In fact, this super-cute one-bedroom apartment – which happens to be literally less than 30 feet away from the ocean – is afforable for its location. Direct access to the ocean-facing deck is an obvious drawcard here; and you can hear the waves from your king-sized bed as you fall asleep.

Have you ever gone to Point Dume and admired those mansions atop the bluff? Well now you can stay in one—or the slightly more affordable guest house, as we’ve chosen. The adorable but impressive cottage has the perfect views for spotting whales or dolphins, though that also means you’ll have to tackle quite a few steps to reach the beach—which makes the pool perfect for when you’re feeling too lazy.
