Immerse yourself in the mysterious world of China's most prestigious spirit at this glossy new boutique and tasting bar in Chinatown

If you’re a keen explorer of rare and unique liquors from around the globe, there’s a new opening in Chinatown that deserves your attention. The luxurious Melbourne Moutai Boutique serves the most revered of all Chinese liquors and the world’s most valuable liquor brand, Moutai.

It may not be well-known yet in Australia, but in China, it’s a prestigious household name and one of the most sought-after spirits in the world. The spirit dates back 2,000 years, first offered as a tribute to the Wu Emperor of the Han Dynasty. It’s a style of baiju (a Chinese spirit), carefully fermented and distilled in a town in China’s south-western region, with a minimum ageing process of five years.

The sleek boutique and tasting bar on Exhibition Street offers visitors the chance to savour and appreciate the complex drink, and learn more about its fascinating history. You can tailor your tasting journey with a variety of options such as flights, single drinks or cocktails, and the experience takes place in an intimate, circular space that seats just 12 at a time.

If you want to really immerse yourself in the world of this characterful liquor, opt for the full masterclass hosted by a Moutai sommelier. The ritual, based on the ancient ceremonies of baiju, involves 78 steps, and whisks guests away to the birthplace of Moutai.

Bottles are also available for purchase, including the highly coveted Moutai Flying Fairy. To learn more, visit the website.
