Farewell Olympic Doughnuts: Footscray institution confirmed closed

Melbourne lost a piece of food history today. This afternoon the City of Maribyrnong's Facebook page released a statement confirming that Olympic Doughnuts will no longer be serving its legendary 80 cent hot jam doughnuts. It was known among the doughnut shop's biggest fans that owner Nick Tsiligiris's health issues have prevented him from doing what he's loved doing since the 1970s, and it seems like the Tsiligiris family's decision to close the shop is related to Nick's ill health.

No doubt Nick's doughnuts will be sorely missed. There's nothing quite like stepping out of Footscray Station towards Olympic Doughnuts for one of Nick's pillow-soft creations, seconds after he's impaled them on his dolphin-shaped hot jam dispenser. If you miss Nick and his doughnuts as much as we do, reminisce and catch local director Ian Tran's documentary Olympic Nick: A Donutumentary on ABC2 on January 20
