Not only have comedians Zoe Coombs Marr and Rhys Nicholson just been nominated for Barry Awards (one of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival's highest accolades) – they’ve also just announced their engagement. If you know much about either comedian, you might be wondering why Coombs Marr and Nicholson have suddenly abandoned their same-sex partners in favour of hetero matrimony. Well, the reason is simple: they’re getting married to highlight the ridiculousness of the fact that queer folk aren’t allowed to put a ring on it in Australia.

This Friday, Coombs Marr (read our four-star review for her show, Trigger Warning) and sharp-as-a-tack Nicholson are hosting their nuptials at the Festival Club at Max Watt’s (where else?). A mere $25 gets you through the door (hey, it’s cheaper than a set of dinner plates) and will go towards supporting Minus18 – an organisation which supports LGBTI youth and runs some seriously glam same-sex and gender-diverse formals.

Naturally, the wedding will be filled with comedy, special guest flower girls, and far more funtimes than you’d find at the average straight person wedding.

Dress formal. Bring your conservative grandma.

The Wedding. Max Watt’s. 11.15pm. $25. Friday April 15.
