The Victorian Government recently approved a $1.5-billion skyscraper set to rise beside the river, at Southbank. Known as "The One", the 67-storey development at 1 Queens Bridge Road has been given the green light by the Minister for Planning, paving the way for a 240m tower featuring luxe apartments, a hotel, offices and more. Here’s what we know so far...
The project sits on a 5,059sqm site at the corner of Queens Bridge Street and the Yarra River, and although the full build is looking pretty futuristic, the heritage-listed Queens Bridge Hotel at its base will be restored and transformed into a new hospo hub, while the floors above will be home to high-end apartments, a luxury hotel, offices and a wildly impressive wellness offering (including pickleball courts, a pool, a sauna and a golf simulator).
According to the architecture firm Cox, the tower’s sculptural form takes its cues from the movement of the Yarra, with six vertical pleats running the full height of its facade. Down at street level, Queensbridge Square is also set for a rethink. The plans aim to transform the existing plaza into a more modern public space and a pedestrian connection along the Yarra.
