Next time you walk past Arts Centre Melbourne you might notice something a little different. On Friday, November 15 Arts Centre Melbourne will publicly launch Protagonist, a new café located in the centre’s outdoor forecourt.

The imposing café design is the work of Cumulus Studio (who has also worked on luxury eco retreat Pumphouse Point) who drew inspiration from theatre. Protagonist features a bronze-coloured curtain that is raised on opening and lowered on closing – just like on stage – and also sells tickets in addition to food and drinks.

The curtain itself is constructed out of kaynemaile – a mesh-like material that was first made for use in the Lord of the Rings trilogy’s many, many chainmail suits. Peckish? The café serves everything from cakes to cocktails.

Protagonist opens Friday, November 15 in the Arts Centre Melbourne forecourt. Drop past from 7am weekdays and 9am weekends.

Here are the best shows to look out for in Melbourne right now.
