Forget debating the perfect place to buy a house or where to go on your next weekend away. The real hot topic is what to call your future (possibly hypothetical) four-legged friend. Do you go for a classic, like Goldie or Lucky, or treat them like a human from the start? Think John, George or Lucy. According to Pet Insurance Australia’s latest data drop, it seems Victorians are doing a bit of both. The researchers at the company have just released the official list of the top ten female and male dog names in the state for 2025 – and you can check if your pup’s name is on the list.

Across the nation, Luna reigns supreme as the top female dog name – but it’s not just an Aussie thing. New data reveals it’s also the current number one pick in the United States and the United Kingdom. Luna is followed by other cutesy names like Coco and Daisy (which came in second and third place in Victoria, and third and second place on the national list). Meanwhile, Ruby and Bella jumped from ninth and tenth place last year to round out the top five on the national list, though Ruby didn’t make the cut here in Vic.

Although Aussies continue to source inspiration from movies and children’s television shows, Nala slipped from fourth place to sixth. The only new name to crack this year’s female top ten is Willow, which bumped Molly out of the national list.

As for males, Teddy and Milo lead the pack for yet another year, followed by popular human-esque names like Leo, Alfie, Archie and Charlie. Meanwhile, Rocky, Henry and Hugo got the boot from the top ten and have been replaced by Murphy, Buddy and Max.
