Melbourne commuters, your ride just got an upgrade. The city's first brand-new tram design in more than a decade has officially entered passenger service, with the next-gen G Class trams now running on route 59 between the CBD and Airport West.
Designed to be Melbourne's most accessible tram yet, the G Class features level boarding, dedicated wheelchair and mobility aid spaces, better heating and cooling, improved passenger information screens and room for up to 150 passengers – around double the capacity of the older Z and A Class trams they'll replace.
The new fleet will initially roll out across Melbourne's west on routes 59, 57 and 82, before expanding to routes 12, 48 and 58 in the coming years.
The trams are being built locally by Alstom in Dandenong as part of the Victorian Government's $1.85 billion investment to deliver 100 new trams and supporting infrastructure.
