Cheap trip to Sydney, anyone? Flixbus is the Euro-based budget coach giant, now operating from Melbourne

If you’ve spent any time backpacking around Europe, you’ll likely be familiar with FlixBus – the obnoxiously bright green bus that hooks you up with cheap rides between all the Euro summer hotspots. I, for one, once took a 10-hour overnight journey from Croatia to Slovenia to save some cash – and was pleasantly surprised by just how smooth and comfy it was. If you’re a fellow FlixBus fan, you’ll be happy that the coach giant now services Melbourne – getting Melburnians to Sydney for a fraction of the price of one of the airlines (and petrol) – at just $62.99.
The route connects from Melbourne Southern Cross to either Sydney's Central Station, or Sydney's International or Domestic Airport (though, note, not yet the new Western Sydney International Airport).
Note that the trip does take about 11 hours – in other words, slower than flying. But the budget experience is anything but basic. Onboard, passengers can enjoy free Wi-Fi, power outlets, reclining seats, toilets and a generous luggage allowance – including one 7kg carry-on item and two pieces of stowed luggage, up to 20kg each. Plus, you can feel good knowing you’re opting for a more sustainable method of travel, with the bus ride from Sydney to Melbourne cutting an individual’s carbon footprint by around 90 per cent compared with flying.
