Time Out says

In a serious case of IYKYK, there's a lively little Italian joint in Melbourne's north-west that has us (and the entire neighbourhood) completely charmed.

Located on Woodland Street in Strathmore (about a 20-minute drive from the CBD), Pizzicotto Pizzeria e Cucina has developed a cult-like local following thanks to its warm, welcoming vibes and excellent Italian menu.

It opened in 2018 with chef and owner Sergio at the helm. Originally from Trapani in Sicily, Sergio brings a delicious wealth of Italian culinary knowledge to the venue, and lives by the simple yet hearthwarming philosophy: “Food is not just food. Food is the culture. Food is family. Food is a journey.”

It's an ethos that resonates right through Pizzicotto. Sergio and the team know many of the returning diners by name, but are just as enthusiastically friendly to new folk who walk through the door. The atmosphere is busy, buzzing and beautifully chaotic – it's not unusual to see the restaurant packed out at 5.30pm on weekends, and the last time I visited on a Saturday night there was a roaming musician singing and playing guitar. As for the food, think of it as a love letter to authentic Italian cuisine.

There's a wood-fired oven churning out tasty thin-crust pizzas and calzones, and all the pasta is handmade – while it's impossible to pick just one fave, I can absolutely vouch for the gnocchi ragu and lasagne. Yum! For starters, you can expect to see all the classics: focaccia, arancini and pork and veal polpettes, plus a generous salumi board. Importantly, there are also vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.

And, of course, no meal is complete without a serving of dolce (dessert). When in doubt, always order the tiramisu (with coffee-soaked sponge, smooth mascarpone and a dusting of cocoa) or cannoli.

When it comes to the drinks, there's a solid cocktail menu – featuring an Aperol Spritz, obvs– and a lovely selection of beer and wine.

So if you're craving a taste of spirited Sicilian hospitality in Melbourne, this is it. Pizzicotto is a true underrated neighbourhood gem we guarantee you'll fall in love with.
