There’s a brand new large-scale immersive mystery taking over the Malthouse’s Merlyn Theatre from October 19 and the first three weeks of performances have already sold out. The world premiere season of Hour of the Wolf was originally planned to run for three weeks only, but Malthouse has just announced a major extension until December 3 due to popular demand.

Hour of the Wolf is far from a staid, sit-down theatre experience, instead following in the footsteps of Because The Night, which Time Out named Melbourne’s must-see theatre experience back in 2021. Rather, audience members are presented with a headset on arrival and set free to roam the venue as the actors perform around them. They’ll find the Merlyn Theatre transformed into the fictional town of Hope Hill, complete with more than a dozen fully realised locations inhabited by a cast of 11 actors.

As audience members wander Hope Hill, a mysterious folk legend will play out around them, chronicling the ‘wolf’ that visits town on the longest night of the year. Each attendee will take the story into their own hands as they decide where to go and which actors to follow. The whole story will eventually become apparent for all in attendance, but each individual will unravel the intricately woven mystery in their own distinct way.

Writer Keziah Warner and director Matthew Lutton have incorporated personalised, location-based sound design to further enhance interactivity. Audiences can also expect puzzle elements, which promise to unlock even more layers of the story.

The impressive cast includes Lucy Ansell, Jack Green, Natasha Herbert, Kevin Hofbauer, Keegan Joyce and Brooke Lee. Emily Milledge, Christina O’Neill, Eva Rees, Karl Richmond, and Katherine Tonkin will also be taking up residence in Hope Hill.

Tickets for the extended season of Hour of the Wolf are on sale now. Standard tickets are priced at $99 and concession tickets will cost you $65.
