The weather’s starting to cool down, and Governors Island’s epic junkyard adventure playground (play:ground NYC) has officially closed for the season, but we have some great news! It’s opening for one last hurrah before NYC gets super chilly. Catch a ferry ride to the island on Sunday, October 15 from noon to 4pm for play:ground NYC’s closing celebration.

Kids will meet the team of playworkers, play and create in the 50,000-square-foot junkyard and learn about the organization’s other projects around the city. Play:ground opened in spring 2016 as a wonderland filled with found objects and discarded materials like wood planks, tools, tires, rope, fabric and more to help children create their own play spaces. Kids also gained new skills are they hammered and chopped wood responsibly, tied knots and used their noggins to build something fun out of the items on hand.

Play:ground’s end-of-season–celebration takes place rain or shine, so don’t let a drizzle keep you away from one of the city’s most creative playgrounds around. The resulting mud will only make for some cool builds and splashing fun! Once the playground closes for the winter, there will still be plenty of reasons to visit Governors Island before it closes to the public at the end of the month—including the first annual Night of 1,000 Jack O’Lanterns, a spooky event held from Oct 26–29. A massive collection of carved and lit pumpkins of all sizes will be on display while carving stations feature master artists at work.
