Despite Punxsutawney Phil's dreadful prediction of an extended winter, we can't help but fantasize about our spring itinerary, largely thanks to Governors Island.

NYC's communal backyard continues to deliver exciting news we all need, and we're staring rather impatiently at the calendar as a result. Last week, we learned that zip-lining will return and be bigger and better than ever. Now, we've been given the green light to start playing on the new natural turf field (well, starting April 1).

The Trust for Governors Island issued a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for sports and recreation uses at the Parade Ground Athletic Field, according to a statement, and that means you and your family need to pick up new soccer balls and cleats for the practice sessions and tournaments that are undoubtedly underway. Schools, leagues and other organizations who are in need of a place to play, look no further. The former nine-hole golf course that is now home to the Parade Ground underwent a makeover and gifted NYers with a new turf field ready to kick off its first season.

"We’re delighted to expand places for New Yorkers to play sports and be active,” said Michael Samuelian, president of The Trust for Governors Island, said in a statement. “The new Parade Ground Athletic Field offers an incredible setting for sports practices and matches, and we invite youth, adult and school leagues to help us bring this new resource to life.”

No need to tell us twice! Those who are looking to reserve some space, click here. Don't worry about a timeline because you'll have access to the field until the cold weather (Nov 31). So what are you waiting for? Governors Island, we are ready to take over.
