It's day six of summer vacation, summer school isn't even in session yet and New Yorkers are already thinking about September

But it's understandable that moms and dads are jumping the gun: During today's press briefing, Mayor Bill de Blasio gave New Yorkers some insight about the 2020–2021 academic year. Responses from the NYC DOE's Return to School survey have been revealed, and out of the 450,000+ families who submitted their input, 75 percent want to send children back to school come the fall.

"The goal, of course, to have the maximum number of kids in our schools as we begin school," the Mayor said. "And we know that there are going be a lot of challenges. We know there are sheer logistical challenges with schools that were crowded before the coronavirus and now have to practice social distancing. But we're going to make it work to the maximum in each school and we're going to work with the scheduling realities to find a way. And we're going to hope and pray in the meantime that the scientific community makes progress on this disease, because that is what will really open up the ability to get back 100 percent."

Last month, a letter from Chancellor Richard Carranza circulated amongst principals, superintendents and other important stakeholders suggesting that September will likely be a mix of online learning and in-person learning. Schools will be expected to comply with city, state and CDC guidelines regarding building capacity, and adjustments will need to be made with scheduling, busing and meals. Additionally, schools will need PPE supplies and could quite possibly conduct temperature checks.

It's likely parents will receive an answer on the fall later this month, but as we know, things are constantly changing. Fingers crossed for a safe and healthy new academic year. Until then, check out the best summer activities for kids.
